Ex-BOJ Deputy Nakaso Sees BOJ Hiking to 1% and Perhaps Beyond

(Bloomberg) -- The Bank of Japan is set to continue raising its benchmark interest rate toward 1% for now and will likely look for further rate hike opportunities afterwards depending on economic conditions, according to a former deputy governor of the central bank.

“The environment for continued interest rate hikes is reasonably well prepared in Japan,” former deputy Hiroshi Nakaso said at a press conference in Tokyo Tuesday. “The bank should continue raising interest rates as much as possible, making appropriate judgments at each meeting.”

Nakaso emphasized the importance of creating room for future policy adjustments as needed, adding that the interest rate is the most effective tool for influencing the economy.

His remarks come as market participants debate the likely terminal rate of the central bank’s current tightening cycle. The BOJ conducted its third rate hike since March 2024 last month, raising the policy rate to 0.5%, the highest level since 2008.

Governor Kazuo Ueda indicated then that more rate increases are likely, noting that the bank is still some distance from the neutral rate. A paper prepared by bank officials last autumn estimated that the neutral rate could be between 1% and 2.5% in nominal terms.

Traders are also closely watching the timing of the next rate hike, with most economists expecting the move around the summer. Nakaso suggested that the Japanese economy is on track for continued rate hikes, noting that it’s unlikely to experience a significant downturn due to improving wage trends and the strength of the US economy.

The former BOJ official, who is currently chairman of Daiwa Institute of Research, highlighted the importance of the bank communicating clearly with the market, and explaining the reasoning behind each decision in a consistent manner.

In the January meeting, the BOJ managed to raise its rate with minimal market impact due to clear signaling in advance, in contrast to the July meeting, when the bank was criticized for surprising traders and helping to trigger a global market meltdown.

Separately, Nakaso said that Japan needs to lower its government debt-to-GDP ratio to a more reasonable level, warning that it is risky to assume that financial stress will have no adverse effects in the future.

Kevin Spacey tells Guy Pearce to 'grow up'
Kevin Spacey has told Guy Pearce to "grow up" after the actor claimed he was "targeted" by his former co-star. The 65-year-old actor has taken to social media to hit back at Guy's recent claims, insisting that the 57-year-old star is "not a victim". In a video posted on X, Kevin - who starred alongside Guy in the 1997 movie 'L.A. Confidential' - said: "Guy Pearce, I've now read the comments that you made about me and while I would have preferred not to have to play this out in the media, you obviously have your own reasons for wanting to do exactly that. "But, we worked together a long time ago, you know? If I did something then that upset you, you could've reached out to me. We could've had that conversation. But instead, you've decided to speak to the press, who are now coming after me because they would like to know what my response is to the things that you've said. "You really want to know what my response is? Grow up." Kevin - whose career previously went into freefall after he was accused of sexual misconduct by a number of men - actually recalled spending time with Guy after they filmed 'L.A. Confidential'. He continued: "Did you also, by the way, tell the press that a year after we shot 'L.A. Confidential', you flew to Georgia while I was shooting 'Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil' just to spend time with me?" Kevin also questioned why his former co-star took so long to voice his concerns. The actor - who was acquitted by a jury of sexual assault charges in 2023 - explained: "Here you are now on a mission some 28 years later, after I've been through hell and back, to do what? "I've got nothing to hide. But Guy, you need to grow up. You are not a victim." By contrast, Guy recently claimed that he was "targeted" by his former co-star. The actor told the 'Awards Chatter' podcast: "I was sort of scared of Kevin because he’s quite an aggressive man. "He’s extremely charming and brilliant at what he does - really impressive, etc. He holds a room remarkably. But I was young and susceptible, and he targeted me, no question."

Justin Baldoni's attorney addresses potential settlement with Blake Lively
Justin Baldoni's attorney insisted they may not be open to a settlement with Blake Lively. The actress, 36, and 49-year-old filmmaker have been embroiled in a bitter labyrinthine legal dispute for months after she accused him of harassment while they made domestic abuse movie ‘It Ends With Us’. Appearing on Matthew Belloni's podcast 'The Town', Baldoni's lawyer Bryan Freedman was asked "what it would require for this to go away", as he referred to the "potential for the circus and the damage to both sides". But Freedman argued: "You keep referring to it as a circus and I get it. You see a lot of cases. "You see a lot of things, but the reality is this is not a circus when you go through an experience like this. "I’ve represented a lot of people in the worst moments of their career, the worst moments of their life. Justin has been destroyed by this." Freedman suggested "the only way" to really attempt to prove his client's innocence could be in court. He continued: "In this day and age, the only way that you can truly get back is to prove your innocence and that’s what we’re actively working to [do]. "That may only be able to be done in a courtroom." Justin, 41, completed filming on 'It Ends With Us' in early 2024 and started a press tour in August, and after fans noted Blake did not participate in interviews with him or attend the film’s premiere. Blake then filed a sexual harassment complaint against Justin – alleging that he and his agents conducted a smear campaign against her. Her lawsuit against him is set to go to trial in March 2026, following her initial filing in New York Federal Court. Blake - who played Justin's on-screen love interest in the movie - previously told the New York Times newspaper: "I hope that my legal action helps pull back the curtain on these sinister retaliatory tactics to harm people who speak up about misconduct and helps protect others who may be targeted." Justin - who also directed the 2024 romantic drama film - has denied the allegations, with his lawyer describing the claims as "categorically false". Bryan, who is acting as a lawyer for the actor and his Wayfarer Studios production company, told Variety: "These claims are completely false, outrageous and intentionally salacious with an intent to publicly hurt and rehash a narrative in the media."

Charlie Sheen's daughter Sami 'bullied' for looking like her dad
Charlie Sheen's daughter Sami Sheen was bullied for looking like her famous father. Sami, 20, has admitted the cruel taunts about her appearance from her school mates convinced her she needed to get a nose job and she's also had to deal with comparisons to her actress mother Denise Richards. Speaking to her mom in an episode of family reality show 'Denise Richards and Her Wild Things', Sami explained: "I had to deal with kids bullying me. "People would say I looked like my dad. I actually got a comment the other day of someone saying, ‘You’ll never be as pretty as your mom'." The episode showed Denise driving her daughter to a consultation with a doctor about her planned rhinoplasty prior to the surgery in August and Sami told her mother she had wanted the operation "for as long as [I] can remember", adding: "I have this freaking honker stuck to my face". Sami also pointed to her mom's face as the example of a "perfect" nose as she explained her hope for the surgery to the doctor. Later in the episode, Denise - who is mom to Sami as well as 19-year-old Lola with her ex-husband Charlie- became tearful as she talked about her daughter's desire to go under the knife. She said: "For my daughter to want to get her nose done, it made me so sad. I feel bad that she has to live up to my nose, or whatever, because I don’t want [my daughters] to feel they have to look a certain way ... "There were times I wanted to move the kids out of LA, and I couldn’t because of where I worked. And they had two parents in this business. I feel bad." However, in a confessional, Sami wondered if she would even be considering cosmetic surgery if she wasn't living the celebrity lifestyle in Los Angeles. She said: "I'm really trying to think if we lived in, like, Alabama and I worked a normal job and I wasn't on social media. I probably would still want a nose job."
