Bride Calls Off Wedding After Discovering Fiancé Secretly Bought a House with His Mom: ‘Giant Red Flag’

"Now, instead of us planning our future together, he’s financially tied to his mother, who’s going to be living there full-time," the upset bride wrote on Reddit

A bride has called off her wedding after discovering what she describes as a "major red flag" with her fiancé.

The 28-year-old bride detailed the situation in a recent post on Reddit, beginning by providing some context to her relationship and the couple's vision for the future. She said she and her fiancé, 30, have been together for five years and had been looking forward to a fall 2025 wedding.

They also had big life plans, she said. "We had been talking for YEARS about our future — like kids, finances and buying a house together. We had a whole plan to save up, find something we both loved and make it our home," the bride wrote, reiterating, "This was talked about a lot."

In light of this, she was shocked to find out that her fiancé had "already bought a house — but not with me … with his MOM." The bride said she had no idea he was even house hunting.

"Apparently his mom found 'the perfect place' and convinced him to split it with her because she 'didn’t want to rent anymore,' " the bride wrote. "So now, instead of us planning our future together, he’s financially tied to his mother who’s going to be living there full-time."

She continued: "And when I asked where I fit into all this, he goes, 'Oh, well, you can move in too, of course!' Like I’m supposed to be thrilled to live in a house his MOM picked out, partially owns and is just… there all the time."

The bride went on to share that her fiancé also gave her another surprising justification for buying the house behind her back. "He admitted he did it because 'I was taking too long' to save and his mom offered him a 'faster way' to own something," she explained.

Feeling utterly shocked and "pissed," the bride took some "space" from her fiancé to process her feelings about the situation.

"And the more I thought about it, the more I realized I can’t marry someone who thinks this is normal. So I called off the wedding," she wrote.

Her fiancé's family didn't understand her decision and began "blowing up her phone" with messages, telling her she was "being dramatic" and "overreacting." They also argued that "it's just a house."

But for the bride, her fiancé's choice to go in on such a major purchase with his mom without consulting his future wife is a "giant red flag."

In the comments of the post, fellow Redditors sympathized with the bride, assuring her she is completely justified in feeling upset and betrayed by her fiancé.

"He didn’t just buy a house. He built a whole future with his mom and left you out of it. That’s not a mistake... it’s a conscious decision to prioritize her over you. And the fact that he thought you’d just move in like a guest in a home his mother controls? Disrespectful as hell," one commenter wrote.

The same person added: "This isn’t just a red flag, it’s a parade of them. If you marry him, you’re not getting a husband... you’re signing up to be the third wheel. He’s already made his choice, and it wasn’t you."

Many others shared the opinion that the OP's fiancé treated her like "an afterthought."

"He bought a house with his MOM, and then expected you to just happily move in? That’s not a partnership, that’s him treating you like an afterthought," a commenter wrote. "And the whole 'taking too long to save' excuse? That’s just him admitting he doesn’t respect your timeline or your shared goals. Your feelings are valid, and you’re absolutely right to call off the wedding. He showed you where his priorities lie, and it’s not with you. Trust your gut."

Yet another Redditor pointed out that the issue goes far beyond the couple's wedding. "It’s about the life you are going to live with him," they argued. "If he puts his mother first with everything or makes important decisions like this without you, it will cause a lot of conflict. And it’s not just a house — him buying a house with her means he won’t be able to buy one with his wife for quite some time."

Someone else told the bride to consider herself lucky as she "dodged the biggest bullet in the world" by finding out about the house purchase before she went through with her wedding.

Another commenter agreed, writing, "This is the only right decision. Just imagine the power dynamics in that household. Everything his mom says goes because you’re living under her roof. You get in an argument with your husband, his mom always sides with him, you lose."

The same commenter added: "You need to be with someone where your relationship power is 50/50 with your partner. The fact that he made such a huge decision when you’re so deep in this relationship and about to marry just shows the lack of respect he has for you. It will only get worse with time."

Justin Theroux and Nicole Brydon Bloom detail lively wedding weekend celebrations
Justin Theroux and Nicole Brydon Bloom's wedding celebrations featured stilt walkers, a bonfire on the beach and "mermaid" swimming. The couple - who got engaged ast summer after two years of dating - tied the knot over the weekend at the Hotel Esencia in Xpu Há, Mexico, where they had previously enjoyed a weekend away, and wanted their guests to enjoy a "taste of [their] dream weekend in the Mayan Riviera paradise". The guests spent Thursday (13.03.25) night on the beach with a bonfire, before the couple held their rehearsal dinner the following evening. Those celebratios began with cocktails on the roof terrace before toasts from friends and family by the pool. Nicole told Vogue magazine: “Many tears were shed and we were overwhelmed with gratitude for the people who have made such a huge impact on our lives, both as individuals and as a couple." They then enjoyed more drinks, using local vendors and entertainers, and "got the party started". The 30-year-old actress noted: “Our band for the night, The Cubanismos, really got the party started. As did the stilt walkers!” The wedding ceremony took place at 5pm on Saturday (15.03.25), but the weather meant a slight change of plans with the venue. Nicole - who wore a custom gown by her friend Victoria Beckham - explained: “We had initially wanted to get married down by the water, but when we woke up on Saturday morning, the wind was incredibly strong and sand was whipping around. We pulled the ceremony back into a tucked away cove. The ocean was still visible but we were protected under a canopy of palm trees.” The 'Paradise' star's sister sang 'Moon River' as she walked down the aisle. Nicole said: “It was so moving to hear her beautiful voice wafting over the soft waves as my step-father Dan McNulty and I made our way through all our family and friends toward Justin at the end of the aisle." The pair have opted to keep the contents of their wedding vows private. Justin said: “All I’ll say is, it was wonderful. Ceremonies with vows are about the words contained within them. And they are better left un-described here. That being said, the officiant said some wonderful things, and my wife was just… well, incredibly touching. I was very moved.” Nicole added: "I kept saying I felt so at peace and so loved all weekend. "Our officiant and my brother-in-law, Patrick McQuade, had us take a moment at the top of our ceremony to face our guests and really soak in the moment. I was overwhelmed with gratitude, love, and joy. "To see so many faces smiling back at me from so many different walks of life and generations felt incredibly grounding and magical. Looking into Justin’s kind, hazel eyes during the ceremony made me feel very safe and loved.” After saying I do, the 53-year-old actor and his new wife took 10 minutes to themselves before kicking off their celebrations. Nicole said: “It was the greatest little reset before rejoining our favorite people for cocktail hour on the lawn." Eliot Sumner opened the reception with two songs before speeches came from Nicole's stepfather and her two sisters, who were joint maids of honour. Nicole said: “All three speeches moved me to tears. Justin’s best men were fantastic and had all our guests belly laughing by the end of their toasts.” A mariachi band played while the couple headed to the floor for their first dance to 'I've Told Every Little Star' by Linda Scott. Justin said: “A first dance and an homage to David Lynch." Nicole added: "We danced for three hours straight with all our guests beneath a canopy of disco balls. My 93-year-old grandma, Laura Bloom, was the life of the party.” The guests who celebrated until the end found themselves inside a little speakeasy within the hotel. Nicole said: “It was rowdy with great music—and Patrick, our officiant, just kept yelling ‘This is the best night of my life!’ "A few mermaids ended up swimming in the pool above. It was the perfect celebratory way to end a fabulous weekend!”

‘Richard II’ Review: Jonathan Bailey Shows Off His Shakespearean Chops in a Stern, Stripped-Down Production
“Nothing in his life became him like the leaving it.” OK, that’s the wrong play since it’s a line from “Macbeth,” but it best sums up Jonathan Bailey’s performance in the new London production of “Richard II”: The actor cranks up several gears the moment his character is forced by usurper Henry Bullingbrook to give up the throne of England for a life of imprisonment in the second half of director Nicholas Hytner’s staging of Shakespeare’s history play. But the fact that Bailey takes time to catch fire is not entirely his fault, since neither Shakespeare nor Hytner make life easy for him. Given that the play is set at the close of the 14th century, it’s no surprise that Hytner believes the play, which depicts the ushering in of a nation’s decades-long succession crisis, needs contemporary reference points. That explains composer Grant Olding’s doom-laden, grinding, low strings that herald a driving rhythm and a light-touch, bitter piano melody opening the production, a clear hat-tip to Nicholas Britell’s Beethoven-tinged theme to “Succession.” It also governs Bob Crowley’s crisp men-in-black-suits design. The antithesis of the exuberantly colored “Guys and Dolls,” the last show to play at Hytner’s physically versatile Bridge Theatre (and which ran almost two years), this limited run of “Richard II” is stripped-down and stern. Gone is the expected heraldry and splendor of the English court in which King Richard traditionally basks. Instead, the audience is arranged in the round observing a traverse-style black runway staging with changing, minimal locations being lifted up through the floor on hydraulics. It makes for welcome fluidity, highly useful in a play that, for the first half at least, moves through an uncomfortable number of locations and a load of exposition. This is a story about the threat to the kingdom and, specifically, Richard, who ruled neither wisely nor well with absolute power by ancient Divine Right. The nation is torn apart by the plots and counterplots of men and their forces loyal to the crown and those backing Henry Bullingbrook, the Duke of Hereford who, successfully as it turns out, puts his eyes on the ultimate prize and steals it.That the tussle for dominance between the men is so potentially dramatic is illustrated by the fact that around fifty years ago, Richard Pasco and Ian Richardson, two leading Shakespeareans of their day, alternated the roles when they led the play in a celebrated RSC production. Here, alas, the balance is uneven. Royce Pierreson is nicely forthright and determined but his performance is unvarying. The wonderfully character-driven abdication scene between the two men is the production’s highpoint, but elsewhere Pierreson’s determination is too one-note. Anyone questioning the wisdom of the star-casting of “Bridgerton” and “Wicked” talent Bailey should bear in mind that he played Cassio in Hytner’s riveting “Othello” at the National Theatre back in 2013 and followed that with an arresting Edgar/Mad Tom opposite Ian McKellen’s King Lear for director Jonathan Munby. As a result, his handling of the language and, crucially, the intent behind it, is entirely easeful. His king is self-satisfied and perfectly petulant, dispatching orders, and often men’s lives, with gleaming disdain. He’s even better when he’s calmly and quietly coming to understand himself and the nature of his previous selfishness in the play’s highly reflective and tender final scenes. But between those extremes of temperament, the living center of the character remains unseen, robbing the production of strength. That’s partly because he has to energize scenes that here lack force. Hytner is unquestionably one of the great directors of Shakespeare, but this production is uncharacteristically undercast in places. Some of the acting proves more proficient than powerful.
