Cognition AI Hits $4 Billion Valuation in Deal Led by Lonsdale’s Firm

(Bloomberg) -- Cognition AI Inc., the developer of an artificial intelligence-powered coding assistant, has raised hundreds of millions of dollars at a valuation close to $4 billion, according to people familiar with the matter.

The new funding round is being led by 8VC, the Joe Lonsdale-backed venture capital firm, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing private information.

8VC declined to comment. A representative for Cognition didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

The round doubles the previous valuation of the startup, which released its generative AI coding tool a year ago. Cognition bills the tool, called Devin, as “the world’s first AI software engineer.”

The new funding round is an indication that investor demand for AI deals is still booming as venture capitalists race to fund promising applications for the technology.

Cognition was valued at $2 billion in a funding round last year, according to PitchBook data. Other investors include Founders Fund, Khosla Ventures, Elad Gil and Conviction Partners. Existing investors also participated in the current round, one of the people said.

VCs have recently flocked toward AI coding assistant startups that compete with Microsoft Corp.-owned GitHub Copilot and Amazon.com Inc.’s CodeWhisperer. These products can automate repetitive coding tasks, predict bugs and, in theory, complete full high-quality software projects independently.

Anysphere, the startup developing the AI code editor, Cursor, is in talks to raise capital at around a $10 billion valuation. Another startup, StackBlitz Inc., the developer of an AI tool for building websites called Bolt.new, is in talks to raise money at a $700 million valuation, Bloomberg reported.

Cognition was founded by Scott Wu, Steven Hao and Walden Yan in 2023. Wu, the company’s chief executive officer and an award-winning coder, previously co-founded Lunchclub, a professional networking tool.

Tracy Morgan taken out of New York Knicks game in wheelchair
Tracy Morgan was taken out of a New York Knicks game in a wheelchair after appearing to fall ill during the game. The 56-year-old comic was sitting courtside at Madison Square Garden on Monday (17.03.25) when, according to photos and footage circulating online, he began vomiting onto the floor. He was then taken out of the arena in a wheelchair holding what appeared to be a red-stained white towel to his face, with one poster on X sharing that he had a nose bleed. The spectator posted alongside a photo: "Tracy Morgan getting wheeled out from courtside at MSG .. bleeding from nose .. could barely stand up … hope he’s ok (sic)" The game - which saw the Knicks beat Miami Heat 116-95 - was delayed for around 10 minutes in the third quarter due to the former '30 Rock' actor's medical incident. A spokesperson for the star has yet to comment on what happened or offer an update on his condition. A Madison Square Garden representative told People magazine: "We hope Tracy feels better soon and look forward to seeing him back courtside." This isn't the first time Tracy - who has diabetes and underwent a kidney transplant in 2010 - has experienced public medical issues. In 2012, he collapsed outside a building at the Sundance Film Festival, with his representative saying it was due to a combination of exhaustion and altitude. Tracy - who returned to work a few days later - posted on social media afterwards: “Superman ran into a little kryptonite. The high altitude in Utah shook up this kid from Brooklyn." And in 2014, he broke his leg and was in a coma for two weeks, later relearning how to walk and talk, after the limo he was riding in was hit from behind by a Walmart truck on the New Jersey Turnpike. Tragically, his friend, fellow passenger James McNair, was killed in the accident. Truck driver Kevin Roper - who hadn't slept for 28 hours when he crashed - later accepted a plea deal to complete 300 hours of community service in order to avoid trial. The former 'Saturday Night Live' star previously expressed his forgiveness towards the driver. He told People magazine on the 10th anniversary of the crash last year: “I want to say to everyone who was in the van with me that night I love you, and we miss you, Uncle Jimmy Mac and God bless your family. "And to the driver that night and his family, me and my comrades forgive you."

Justin Baldoni's lawyer 'surprised by Ryan Reynolds' joke'
Justin Baldoni's lawyer was "surprised" to see Ryan Reynolds joke about his client's ongoing lawsuit. The 48-year-old actor seemingly referenced Justin's legal dispute with Blake Lively, Ryan's wife, during the 'SNL50: The Anniversary Special' over the weekend, and Bryan Freedman, Justin's attorney, has now questioned Ryan's decision to joke about the lawsuit. Appearing on 'Hot Mics with Billy Bush', Bryan said: "I'm unaware of anybody, frankly, whose wife has been sexually harassed and has made jokes about that type of situation. I can't think of anyone who's done anything like that. It surprised me." During the show, Ryan - who was sat among the audience - was asked: "How's it going?" And in response, the Hollywood star replied: "Great, why? What have you heard?" The joke was widely considered to be a reference to Blake's ongoing legal dispute with Justin. The 37-year-old actress has accused Justin, 41, of causing her "severe emotional distress". The movie star - who played Justin's on-screen love interest in 'It Ends with Us' - previously told the New York Times newspaper: "I hope that my legal action helps pull back the curtain on these sinister retaliatory tactics to harm people who speak up about misconduct and helps protect others who may be targeted." Justin - who also directed the 2024 romantic drama film - later denied the allegations, with his lawyer describing the claims as "categorically false". Bryan, who is acting as a lawyer for the actor and his Wayfarer Studios production company, told Variety: "These claims are completely false, outrageous and intentionally salacious with an intent to publicly hurt and rehash a narrative in the media."
