‘The View’ On MAGA Backlash Over Tom Hanks’ ‘SNL50’ ‘Black Jeopardy’ Sketch: “They’re Making Anyone Who Voted For Trump Look Like A Racist”

The View addressed the MAGA backlash over Tom Hanks’ appearance on SNL50: The Anniversary Special on Sunday, when the actor reprised his role of Doug on the sketch “Black Jeopardy.”

In the sketch, Hanks plays a Donald Trump supporter wearing a MAGA cap and freaking out over shaking host Kenan Thompson’s hand.

“The fact remains that they’re making anyone who voted for Trump look like a racist, and that’s why they’re mad,” Joy Behar said on Tuesday’s The View.

The comedian added, “I personally would never do that, because I don’t believe that any group is one thing.”

Behar sympathized with Trump supporters, saying that Trump “misled” a lot of those who voted for him, adding, “They thought that grocery prices would come down. They’re up. They thought inflation was coming down. It’s up. They thought that Medicaid was safe. It’s not. They thought Social Security was safe. It’s not. So it’s not only racism that caused Trump to be in office. We have to remember that. So of course they’re going to be insulted.”

Sunny Hostin jumped in, recalling that Hanks first played the Doug role in 2016 and was one of the most popular sketches.

“I think it’s a very subversive sketch,” Hostin said. “In fact, it’s about Black culture being American culture.”

Hostin also noted that the part where Hanks was hesitant about shaking Thompson’s hand was a call-back to when Republican Sen. Deb Fischer’s husband refused to shake Vice President Kamala Harris’ hand earlier this year.

Co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin, a Republican commentator and former White House Director of Strategic Communications under Trump’s first term, said she “personally thinks the outrage over it is a little overblown.”

Former View co-host and Republican loyalist Meghan McCain took to X to call out Hanks for participating in the sketch, posting, “Tom Hanks always wants to pretend he’s the likable everyman but he’s as hate mongering of regular Americans as any host on msnbc. Good luck becoming less and less culturally relevant by the second bro.”

Jack Whitehall teases 'really big night' at the BRITs
Jack Whitehall is planning "a really big night" for his BRITs return. The 36-year-old comedian is set to host the awards show for the fifth time in his career on March 1, and Jack is thrilled that he has another chance to host the annual event. Speaking to The Sun newspaper's Bizarre column, Jack explained: "The last show I did was in 2021, which had a fair few restrictions due to COVID. "So it always felt like, due to circumstances beyond my control, I’d maybe gone out with a little bit of a whimper. "I think the Brits 2025 is going to make up for that and be a really big night. "When I first started out I was just like ‘Jack, don’t mess this up. This is such a big opportunity’. You don’t want to say the wrong thing and insult someone and then get taken off air. Then I got to a point where I was like, ‘It’s probably best now to not outstay my welcome’. And now, here I am, back again." Jack previously admitted that he can't wait to return to the role of host, describing the BRITs as his "favourite night of the year". The stand-up comedy star said: "They say that absence makes the heart grow fonder, and that is absolutely the case with the BRIT Awards. It is my favourite night of the year." Jack hasn't been available to host the show in recent years due to his jam-packed work schedule. But he's now available and he's thrilled to be hosting the event once again. An insider previously told The Sun newspaper: "Jack is such a brilliant BRITs host and isn’t afraid to take the p*** out of some of the world’s biggest stars. "He has such a hectic diary that he’s been unable to take part for the past few years. But he was available this time and said yes immediately. It is one of his favourite gigs as he can have some real fun with the celebs."

Emma Bunton and Mel B 'reunited in South Korea'
Emma Bunton and Mel B reunited in November to take part in a reality TV show. The 49-year-old pop star and Mel secretly flew to Seoul, South Korea, in late 2024, when they sang alongside K-pop idols for a TV show. A source told The Sun newspaper: "A Spice Girls reunion is a way off. "So having Emma and Mel back on stage singing a Spice Girls song together might be the closest fans get to a comeback, even though it will be with K-pop stars rather than Geri Horner, Melanie C and Victoria Beckham. "They flew to South Korea at the end of last year and were on set for quite a few days as they battled it out with other pop veterans. "With them alone on board, it is a big show. But there’s also Boy George and loads of other chart-topping stars, which will be enough to encourage people to tune in." The reality show will air on Apple TV and will also feature the likes of Megan Thee Stallion and Psy, the 'Gangnam Style' singer. Meanwhile, Melanie recently revealed that she's ready to "start planning" a Spice Girls reunion. The 51-year-old singer would love to reunite with her bandmates to mark the 30th anniversary of 'Wannabe', the group's 1996 hit single. Melanie told Rebecca Judd On Apple Music 1: "There has to be something befitting of 30 years since ‘Wannabe’. "Once a Spice Girl, always a Spice Girl. We all feel like that, but we now are getting together because we know if we're going to do anything, we have to start planning things to get things right. "We have to start making the plans right now and putting them into action. So fingers crossed."
