3 Canadian Stocks I Loaded Up on in 2024 for Long-Term Wealth

Written by Amy Legate-Wolfe at The Motley Fool Canada

In 2024, I set my sights on three promising investments. Each offered unique opportunities to bolster my long-term wealth strategy. Of course, what’s right for me isn’t right for everyone. But when looking into these three Canadian stocks, it’s hard to see the downside.

Shopify

Shopify (TSX:SHOP), Canada’s e-commerce darling, continued its upward trajectory in 2024. The Canadian stock’s recent earnings report showcased a revenue surge of 31.2% year-over-year, reaching $8.9 billion. This impressive growth translated to a net income of $2 billion, with a diluted earnings per share (EPS) of $2.24. Such robust figures highlight Shopify’s resilience and adaptability in the ever-evolving digital marketplace.

The Canadian stock’s performance mirrored the company’s financial health. Trading between $72.36 and $183.53 over the past 52 weeks, Shopify’s shares demonstrated significant appreciation. As of writing, the Canadian stock was priced at $147.80, reflecting investor confidence and the company’s strong market position.

Looking ahead, Shopify’s commitment to innovation and expanding its merchant base positions it well for sustained growth. The increasing shift towards online retail and the company’s strategic initiatives suggest a bright future for this tech titan – hence, why I plan to load up.

WELL Health

WELL Health Technologies (TSX:WELL), a leader in Canada’s healthcare sector, also caught my attention. The Canadian stock’s latest corporate update revealed that its Canadian clinics experienced organic growth of 24% in 2024, with same-clinic revenue growth at 12%. This robust performance underscores WELL Health’s dedication to enhancing healthcare delivery through technology.

Financially, WELL Health reported trailing 12 months (TTM) revenue of $957.7 million, with a net income of $73.4 million. The Canadian stock’s operating cash flow stood at $126.8 million, indicating strong liquidity and operational efficiency. As of writing, WELL Health’s stock was trading at $5.43, within a 52-week range of $3.41 to $7.36.

The future looks promising for WELL Health, especially with its strategic spin-offs and focus on digital healthcare solutions. Analysts anticipate continued revenue growth, making it a compelling choice for long-term investors. And, of course, myself!

VXC

To diversify my portfolio further, I invested in the Vanguard FTSE Global All Cap ex Canada Index ETF (TSX:VXC). This exchange-traded fund (ETF) offers exposure to global equities, excluding Canadian stocks, providing a broad investment spectrum. As of writing, VXC was trading at $65.39, with a 52-week range between $54.88 and $67.81. The ETF’s diversified holdings across various sectors and regions make it a solid choice for mitigating country-specific risks.

By the time she was 44, Teresa Tiano was already intimately familiar with cancer. Not only was she treated for stage 0 bladder cancer eight years earlier, but she had also lost both parents to cancer. In July 2011, she became concerned she would follow in her father's footsteps and develop colon cancer. Although she was younger than the recommended age to begin colon cancer screening, she asked her healthcare providers to book her both an endoscopy and colonoscopy.

‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Recap: Meet the White Tiger
All it takes is a fellow vigilante to get Matt Murdock back into action–unofficially, that is, and not yet in his firetruck red suit. The second episode of the Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again starts out very much like a legal procedural. Nothing to see here! No crazy violence or anything. Just a regular crime show, like Law & Order: MCU.

Justin Baldoni's attorney addresses potential settlement with Blake Lively
Justin Baldoni's attorney insisted they may not be open to a settlement with Blake Lively. The actress, 36, and 49-year-old filmmaker have been embroiled in a bitter labyrinthine legal dispute for months after she accused him of harassment while they made domestic abuse movie ‘It Ends With Us’. Appearing on Matthew Belloni's podcast 'The Town', Baldoni's lawyer Bryan Freedman was asked "what it would require for this to go away", as he referred to the "potential for the circus and the damage to both sides". But Freedman argued: "You keep referring to it as a circus and I get it. You see a lot of cases. "You see a lot of things, but the reality is this is not a circus when you go through an experience like this. "I’ve represented a lot of people in the worst moments of their career, the worst moments of their life. Justin has been destroyed by this." Freedman suggested "the only way" to really attempt to prove his client's innocence could be in court. He continued: "In this day and age, the only way that you can truly get back is to prove your innocence and that’s what we’re actively working to [do]. "That may only be able to be done in a courtroom." Justin, 41, completed filming on 'It Ends With Us' in early 2024 and started a press tour in August, and after fans noted Blake did not participate in interviews with him or attend the film’s premiere. Blake then filed a sexual harassment complaint against Justin – alleging that he and his agents conducted a smear campaign against her. Her lawsuit against him is set to go to trial in March 2026, following her initial filing in New York Federal Court. Blake - who played Justin's on-screen love interest in the movie - previously told the New York Times newspaper: "I hope that my legal action helps pull back the curtain on these sinister retaliatory tactics to harm people who speak up about misconduct and helps protect others who may be targeted." Justin - who also directed the 2024 romantic drama film - has denied the allegations, with his lawyer describing the claims as "categorically false". Bryan, who is acting as a lawyer for the actor and his Wayfarer Studios production company, told Variety: "These claims are completely false, outrageous and intentionally salacious with an intent to publicly hurt and rehash a narrative in the media."

Kevin Spacey tells Guy Pearce to 'grow up'
Kevin Spacey has told Guy Pearce to "grow up" after the actor claimed he was "targeted" by his former co-star. The 65-year-old actor has taken to social media to hit back at Guy's recent claims, insisting that the 57-year-old star is "not a victim". In a video posted on X, Kevin - who starred alongside Guy in the 1997 movie 'L.A. Confidential' - said: "Guy Pearce, I've now read the comments that you made about me and while I would have preferred not to have to play this out in the media, you obviously have your own reasons for wanting to do exactly that. "But, we worked together a long time ago, you know? If I did something then that upset you, you could've reached out to me. We could've had that conversation. But instead, you've decided to speak to the press, who are now coming after me because they would like to know what my response is to the things that you've said. "You really want to know what my response is? Grow up." Kevin - whose career previously went into freefall after he was accused of sexual misconduct by a number of men - actually recalled spending time with Guy after they filmed 'L.A. Confidential'. He continued: "Did you also, by the way, tell the press that a year after we shot 'L.A. Confidential', you flew to Georgia while I was shooting 'Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil' just to spend time with me?" Kevin also questioned why his former co-star took so long to voice his concerns. The actor - who was acquitted by a jury of sexual assault charges in 2023 - explained: "Here you are now on a mission some 28 years later, after I've been through hell and back, to do what? "I've got nothing to hide. But Guy, you need to grow up. You are not a victim." By contrast, Guy recently claimed that he was "targeted" by his former co-star. The actor told the 'Awards Chatter' podcast: "I was sort of scared of Kevin because he’s quite an aggressive man. "He’s extremely charming and brilliant at what he does - really impressive, etc. He holds a room remarkably. But I was young and susceptible, and he targeted me, no question."

Gal Gadot blames social media for making the world 'very confusing'
Gal Gadot thinks social media has made the world feel "very confusing". The 39-year-old actress' four daughters - Alma, 13, Maya, eight, Daniella, three, and Ori, 12 months - are all growing up in a social media-obsessed society, and Gal believes the ever-increasing reliance on platforms like Instagram and TikTok is actually unhealthy for young women. The Hollywood star - who has been married to businessman Jaron Varsano since 2008 - told DuJour magazine: "I always tell my kids that for me, growing up was so much easier than it is for you. "They grew up with all these filters. With curated postings. They think it’s real, not knowing that it’s been totally filtered and retouched. "I tell them, ‘Whatever you see out there, it’s false, not true.’ It’s a very confusing world for a girl." Gal's family home was "very, very quiet" during her own childhood. But the actress has joked that her home life is now "mayhem". She explained: "I wanted to have a messy home with mayhem and all that." Gal actually relishes the noise and energy created by her children. The actress said: "If you come to my house, they laugh, they fight, they cry. It’s a whole range of emotions, and I love it. Yes, it’s a lot. I juggle. I do my best and we have help and my husband does the best job as a dad. I don’t sleep a lot." Gal previously admitted that it's not easy to balance her acting career with her family life. The 'Wonder Woman' star told Glamour magazine in 2020: "You have to balance between having a career and having a family. It's something that is always a handful and my career takes a lot."

It’s an elusive dream for so many docmakers: to impact legislation, to find justice, to make a difference. To change the world. With Free Leonard Peltier, filmmakers Jesse Short Bull (Lakota Nation vs. United States) and David France (How To Survive a Plague) achieved their eponymous goal: Seven days before the world premiere of their film at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival in January, President Joe Biden, in his last act before leaving office, issued a clemency order, commuting Peltier’s sentence to home confinement.
